Wednesday Words on the Wild: Nemophilist

Eastern Sierras Forest
Ne`moph´i`list: n. 1. One who is fond of forests or forest scenery; a haunter of the woods. ~ Webster’s Dictionary
There is pleasure in the pathless woods, there is rapture in the lonely shore, there is society where none intrudes, by the deep sea, and music in its roar; I love not Man the less, but Nature more. ~ Lord Byron

Remember this grade school taunt? You whisper to a boy, “Psst, your epidermis is showing!” Then, erupt into giggles with your watching friends as he glances down to see if his fly is open.

I can only imagine how mortified I would have been as a child to be called a “Nemophilist.” Now, I’d proudly take it as an accurate assessment — that is, I will if I can remember what it means. If not, I’ll have to resort to the perfect retort: “Why don’t you go google yourself?”
