The Smell of Camping

I promise, I’m not one of those bacon fanatics. I like bacon — but usually only bacon. Not “Something + bacon.”

That said, I absolutely love the double-smoked bacon from Mahogany Smoked Meats in Bishop, CA. My favorite dish to put it in is a Hungarian dish called, “Beans as in Somogy” from “The Cuisine of Hungary” by George Lang.

But I digress. Bishop is hours away, so if I’m going near there, I take a cooler, stock up on bacon and freeze it when I get home. Today, as part of another recipe which requires bacon, I decided to use one of my precious bacon packs.

As I laid it in the pan — even before it started cooking — the smell of smoke evoked a campsite by a river in my mind…

I’ve had this reverie before. The force is strong with this one. This is the time of year I’ve gone the past three years in a row. My body craves it.

I want to go camping so bad!

(And I’m not the only one. I think the little one is meant to be watching the salmon fight, but I’m sure he’s thinking, “I’d rather be camping.”)

Unfortunately, my job prohibits a camping trip right now. In the next few weeks, Campfire Tales will be a virtual campground. If you have any camping pictures or stories you would like to share, please send them to:

  1. I like Bacon, but I love sausage!
Does that place near Bishop make sausage? ….wait, don’t tell me! I can’t go get it either.
Maybe there is a sausage vendor near a campsite that is closer to me??!!

    • The good news is that there is a campsite very near you called, “Camp Sausage Links.” When you pay your entrance fee, they give you your choice of mild or spicy sausage. If you bring a tree to plant at the campground, they will also send a ranger to your site who will both instruct in planting the tree, and will cook a full breakfast for you of the sausage, eggs to order, and a pot of strong campstove coffee. Enjoy!
